Summary

The charts of 521 patients with cancer of the oral cavity and clinically negative necks on initial examination were reviewed. No patient had complete elective treatment to the neck. In 27.4 per cent of the patients the neck was partially irradiated in conjunction with treatment to the primary lesion. In 26 per cent of the group nodal disease subsequently developed. Four per cent of the group whose primary lesion was considered controlled died with cancer in the neck. Complete elective treatment of the neck is not advocated. Irradiation of the proximal lymphatics is useful.
